sunflowers against a wall

sunflowers against a wall

Sunflowers make me smile. They exude happiness and are a sunny celebration of summer. I just recently returned from a road trip through the central valley of California, where we drove past miles and miles of bright, cheery sunflower fields. They were all in bloom and spectacular. With August being my month (a Leo), it seems fitting to dedicate a painting series to the showy sunflower.

Throughout the month of August, I’ll celebrate sunflowers with a wide range of blog posts. I have a tutorial planned with an easy way to create sunflower stencils. I’ll be painting sunflowers in various sizes and media and showing some photos of the “guts” of those paintings and some of my unusual “paint brushes”. I’ll write a little about some famous artists who have painted sunflowers, going beyond van Gogh. I’ll discuss their healing energies, and even some of my own trials and tribulations in growing them.

I hope you’ll check back throughout the month and join me on this happy sunflower-filled journey.

Here are the first two sunflower paintings I’ve already completed:

Painting inspired by Mural at Leif Erikson Park

I recently had the opportunity to think about what community spirit means to me and realized my experience painting a mural at a local park was the perfect example. I’ve submitted this new painting to the City of San José’s Office of Cultural Affairs’ Public Art Program as an example of community spirit and resilience.

Fresh Art Hung in San Jose

I updated the paintings I have hanging at KALEID Gallery in San Jose, California today. This was the fastest update I’ve ever done thanks to amazing help from Fernando. I’d run out of quarters for the parking meter out front, and was putting in every last dime I could dig out of my car, which gave me about 3-4 minutes per each. Pitiful hahaha. Fernando was so much help! Together, we did the whole hanging in less than an hour and I didn’t get a parking ticket. Woot!
